This week, Namibia is playing host to the 2010 FANRPAN Regional Food Security Policy Dialogue, where over 200 policymakers, farmers, agricultural product dealers, scientists and non-governmental organisations from across Africa and the world will gather to address African priorities on food security and climate change and its impacts on agricultural development, natural resource management and rural livelihoods.

GENDER FARMING SYSTEMS FOR SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) are undertaking a gender mapping of Africa in order to better understand how to best target water management strategies to farmers.  This map will be used to develop recommendation on how to target different agriculture water management technologies to the farm's main decision makers.

We are inviting people who know the gender patterns of farming in particular areas to provide information for the map.  This knowledge may come from being an inhabitant, extension worker, Ph.D. student, researcher, gender specialist, etc.  The questionnaire will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.  However, the survey has been set up to allow participants the option to save completed sections and return later to complete the survey.

 Next week several of the AgWater Solutions team will be attending the Regional consultation on Integrated Drought Management in Colombo, Sri Lanka. They will be able to share some of their experience on the project and also gain useful insights to improve the on-going research.

Kampala, Uganda (8 July 2010)—A network of African agribusiness men and women from across the continent this week called for greater support for the development of private entrepreneurship in rural areas. Participants of the first ever Strategic Planning Workshop on Agrodealer Development raised the need for more training and capacity building in business management, greater access to finance, and higher quality farm inputs, particularly improved seeds, to meet increased farmer demand in support of an Africa-wide effort to transform small-scale agriculture from subsistence to business.
